How do I know when my soil is dry enough to water?

Stick your finger an inch into the soil. If it's dry, water. If moist, wait. Or lift the pot — heavy means wet, light means time to water. The lift test is the most reliable method.

Good question — I struggled with this too at first. The advice above is solid.

Can confirm this works. My first grow had the same issue and these fixes solved it.

Started with the same setup. Worked great for my first autoflower from Royal King Seeds.

Went through this exact scenario. Fixed it by adjusting watering schedule and it bounced back in 3 days.

Thanks for the tip! The lift test is definitely the most reliable for me too. I used to overwater a lot until I started picking up the pots.I’ve been running some stuff from The Seed Pharm in soil lately and they seem to like a good dry back between waterings. Appreciate the advice!

The lift test works but i'd actually push back a little on it being the most reliable across the board, because pot size and medium matter a lot. A big fabric pot full of perlite-heavy mix can feel light and still have wet pockets down low near the roots. For what its worth, the finger test combined with watching how the leaves are sitting in the morning tells me more than anything else.
