New growers: buy a decent pH meter first

If I could go back and tell myself one thing before my first grow, it would be this: get a reliable pH meter before you buy anything else. Not the cheap $8 strip tests. An actual digital meter with a calibration solution. It will save you more heartache than any fancy nutrient line or grow light upgrade ever could.

So many early problems that look like nutrient deficiencies, stunted growth, or just "something seems off" are actually pH lockout. The plant literally cannot absorb what it needs when the root zone pH is wrong. Yellowing leaves, purple stems, weird spots, people spend weeks chasing those symptoms and the fix was just getting the water right.

For what its worth, in living soil like i run, the biology buffers a lot of this for you over time. But even then, knowing your water's starting pH matters. And if you're in coco or any kind of amended mix, pH is honestly non-negotiable from day one.

Calibrate it when you get it, store the probe properly, and check your feed water every time. That one habit alone puts you ahead of probably half the "what is wrong with my plant" posts you see here. It's boring advice but it's the real stuff.
