How to Germinate Cannabis Seeds – Step by Step (100% Success Rate)
After 15 years and hundreds of seeds, here's my bulletproof germination method:
What you need:
- Paper towels
- 2 plates
- Distilled water (room temperature)
- Seeds
- Warmth (70-80°F / 21-27°C)
The Method:
- Soak seeds in a glass of water for 12-18 hours (no more!)
- Wet 2 paper towels until damp, not dripping
- Place seeds on one towel, fold the other over top
- Put between 2 plates (creates a dark, humid dome)
- Keep in a warm, dark spot
- Check every 12 hours — re-moisten if needed
- Once taproot is 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, plant it
Common Mistakes:
- Using tap water with high chlorine
- Keeping seeds too wet (they drown)
- Planting taproot up instead of down
- Handling the taproot with bare fingers (use tweezers)
- Giving up too early — some seeds take 5-7 days
This method works with any seed from a quality seed bank. I've had near 100% success with Royal King Seeds genetics.

I've been using the direct-to-soil method lately and having great results too. Just poke a hole, drop the seed in, and keep the soil moist. Simpler and less handling.
Pro tip: add a tiny bit of hydrogen peroxide to your soak water. It softens the shell and prevents mold. Game changer.
Solid method. The double plate trick is underrated , it really does help keep consistent humidity without over saturating the towels. I do almost the exact same thing, except I usually skip the initial soak and go straight to the paper towel if the seeds look fresh.I’ve had really good germination rates with The Seed Pharm seeds using this style of method.
